What do Music Therapists do and Who can benefit from Music Therapy?
According to AMTA,
Music therapists assess emotional well-being, physical health, social functioning, communication abilities, and cognitive skills through musical responses.
Music sessions for individuals and groups based on client needs are designed by them.
They use music improvisation, receptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery, music performance, and learning through music.
Therapists participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, ongoing evaluation, and follow up.
As for who can benefit from the Therapy, then the answer would be almost everyone.
Children, adolescents, adults, elderly;
People with mental health needs, developmental and learning disabilities;
Anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other aging related conditions, substance abuse problems, brain injuries, physical disabilities, and acute and chronic pain;
Mothers in labor;
A person with absolutely no health issue just to inculcate the benefits of Music perfectly.
Anyone and everyone can benefit from this therapy.
I personally use Amazon Prime Music to listen to music on the go. I know there are lot of options in the market but you have to listen to their ads after almost every song or burn a hole in your pocket. Amazon prime music has literally NO ADS, it costs even less than a pizza and offers fast delivery plus so so many movies and tv shows as well. I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t have their membership but if you don’t, then please go sign up. You are missing out on so much.

4 Music Therapy Exercises that you can do at home
Here are four music therapy exercises that you can practice at your home from time to time for your well-being.
- Music Bingo (group activity)
It’s very easy, You have to draw a song and the others have to guess it and if they guess it right – y’all sing it together.
- Antakshari (group activity)
Y’all are divided in teams – the first team sings a song, now the second team gets 20 seconds to start singing a song that starts with the last letter of the last word where the previous team’s song ended.
For example – if the last word of the first team’s song was You – then the second team’s song has to start with the letter “u”.
You can end or start the song from any sentence but not from mid-sentence.
- Music Meditation (individually done)
Start a song at a relaxing volume, sit in a comfortable position or lie down, close your eyes, start taking deep comfortable breaths with comfortable focus on the breath. It’s okay if a thought or two passes the mind – it’s natural. Be in this state for as many songs as you’d like.
- Music Visualization (individually done)
Start a song at a relaxing volume, sit in a comfortable position or lie down, close your eyes, start taking deep comfortable breaths and start imagining yourself happy in a fantasy or real-life situation that relates to the emotions in the specific song. Chose the songs that click with you and induce emotions you want to induce.
Music therapy songs suggestions –
Any and every song that induces a feeling within you is right.
Songs that make you cry are helping you in letting it all out and are SUPER HEALTHY!
You can bundle up your playlist according to what you need to.
For example – If you’re feeling heartbroken start with songs that help you let those feelings out, continue with it for 3-4 songs when you feel you’ve screamed/cried the emotions out enough, then start with 3-4 songs that give you hope and mild happiness and smiles.
Just make a playlist that creates a healthy flow of emotions.
